κηρύλος [υ],ὁ, fabulous sea-bird, sts. identified with ἀλκυών, or the male of that species (cf. Antig. ap. Hsch.), Alcm. 26.2, Archil. 141 (cf. 49 D.), Arist. HA 593b12, Clearch. 73, Ael. NA 5.48: κειρύλος, Ar. Av. 300 (cf. Sch.ad loc., Hsch.), applied to the barber Sporgilos (from κείρω).
