καλλωπίζω

A. beautify the face: hence, give a fair appearance to a thing, embellish, κ. ὄνομα Pl. Cra. 408b, cf. 409c (Pass.), Phld. Hom. p.58 O.; τὴν πόλιν, ὥσπερ γυναῖκα Plu. Per. 12; τὸ λογικόν Arr. Epict. 3.1.26:—Pass., οἰκία . . δαπάνῃ κεκαλλωπισμένη X. Hier. 11.2, cf. Oec. 9.4; κεκ. τὸ Χρῶμα, i. e. painted, Id. Mem. 2.1.22: metaph., λόγος κεκ., opp. καθαρός, Hermog. Id. 1.3; λέξις κεκ. S.E. M. 2.55.

II. Med., adorn oneself, make oneself fine or smart, Pl. Smp. 174a.

2. metaph., pride oneself in or on a thing, τινι Id. Phdr. 252a, X. Ages. 11.11; ἐπί τινι Pl. R. 405b: also κ. ὅτι . . Id. Prt. 317c; ὡς . . c. part., Id. Cri. 52c, Tht. 195d: abs., make a display, show off, Arist. Rh.Al. 1421a4; of a horse, X. Eq. 10.5: c. acc. cogn., πολλὰ πρὸς αὑτούς Phld. Rh. 1.238 S.; ταῦτα ‐ίζεται makes a fair show, Iamb. Protr. 20.

3. to be coy or mock-modest, τινι or πρός τινα towards another, Pl. Prt. 333d, Phdr. 236d: c. inf., κ. παραιτεῖσθαι affecting to deprecate, Plu. Caes. 28, cf. Phalar. Ep. 92.
