A. that which is thrown away in cleansing: in pl., offscourings, refuse of a sacrifice, A. Ch. 98; residuum of ore after smelting, slag, Str. 3.28: sg.,= κάθαρσις 11, Hp. Epid. 5.2.
2. = φαρμακός, Sch.Ar. Pl. 454, Sch.Id. Eq. 1133: hence metaph., of persons, outcast, Ar. Pl. 454; αἱρούμενοι καθάρματα στρατηγούς Eup. 117.8; τοὺς μὲν καθάρματα, τοὺς δὲ πτωχούς, τοὺς δ’ οὐδ’ ἀνθρώπους ὑπολαμβάνων εἶναι D. 21.185, cf. 199, 18.128, Aeschin. 3.211, etc.
II. in pl.,= κάθαρσις, purification, E. IT 1316; ποντίων καθαρμάτων . . ἀμοιβάς in return for clearing the sea (of pirates), Id. HF 225.
III. ἐντὸς τοῦ καθάρματος within the purified ground where the assembly was held, Ar. Ach. 44.
