A. of or called after Io, epith. of the sea between Epirus and Italy, at the mouth of the Adriatic sea, across which Io swam, πόντιος μυχὸς . . Ἰόνιος κεκλήσεται, τῆς σῆς πορείας μνῆμα A. Pr. 840; another expl. in Theopomp.Hist. 125; Ἰ. κόλπος Hdt. 6.127, Th. 1.24; θάλασσα, πόρος, Pi. P. 3.68, N. 4.53; also simply ὁ Ἰόνιος Th. 6.30; later Ἰόνιον πέλαγος AP 6.251 (Phil.).
