A. lament, dirge, used by Trag. in lyr., A. Supp. 115, E. Rh. 895, Tr. 1304, Ph. 1033, etc.; τὸν ἰ. ἀρίστευσε Theoc. 15.98: rare in Prose, Metrod. Herc. 831.17 (s.v.l.)<*> prov., ἰαλέμου ψυχρότερος, of something tedious and dull, Zen. 4.39.
II. as Adj., melancholy, γόοι E. HF 109(lyr., s.v.l.); but usu.,
2. tedious, dull, stupid, ποιηταί Luc. Pseudol. 24; ἰατροί Gal. 14.617: as Subst., dullard, oaf, Men. 236, Hermog. Id. 2.6; title of play by Amphis, Ath. 2.69b. (Perh. from the cry ἰή.)
