ἧλος

A. nail-head, stud, as an ornament, σκῆπτρον χρυσείοις ἥλοισι πεπαρμένον Il. 1.246, cf. 11.633; ἐν δέ οἱ [τῷ ξίφει] ἧλοι χρύσειοι πάμφαινον ib.29, cf. Ath. 11.488b, c: hence, of the stars, Placit. 2.14.3.

2. after Hom., nail, Pi. P. 4.71: ἧλοι σιδηροῖ καὶ ξύλινοι X. Cyn. 9.12, etc.; of shoenails, Thphr. Char. 4.13: prov., ἥλῳ ἐκκρούειν τὸν ἧλον Luc. Laps. 7; ἥλῳ ὁ ἧλος (sc. ἐκκρούεται) Arist. Pol. 1314a5, etc.

II. wart, callus, Thphr. Ign. 37, Nic. Th. 272; ἧλοι καὶ τύλοι Dsc. 1.104, cf. Asclep. ap. Gal. 13.647; also on plants, esp. the olive, Thphr. HP 4.14.3.
