A. part above the knee, great muscle of the thigh, taken as a sign of strength and vigour, κεν . . μεγάλην ἐπιγουνίδα θεῖτο he would grow a stout thigh-muscle, Od. 17.225; οἵην ἐπιγουνίδα φαίνει 18.74,cf. Theoc. 26.34, Alciphr. 3.19, Philostr. Im. 2.24; prob. in this sense in A.R. 3.875.
