A. stand out or project from, τινός Ar. V. 1377; πέτρα ἐξέχουσα ὑπὲρ κοιλάδος SIG 827 iii 11 (ii A. D.).
2. abs., stand out, be prominent, Hp. VC 1; ἐξέχοντα ὦτα Corn. ND 27; ἐξέχοντα convexities, opp. κοῖλα, Pl. R. 602c; τὸ ἐξέχον in painting, Philostr. VA 2.20:—Pass., τὰ ἐξεχόμενα projecting panels, LXX 3 Ki. 7.16(29).
b. of the sun, shine out, appear, ἢν ἐξέχῃ ἕλη κατ’ ὄρθρον Ar. V. 771; ἔξεχ’, ὦ φίλ’ ἥλιε shine out, fair sun, Id. Fr. 389; πρὶν ἥλιον ἐ. before sunrise, Lexap. D. 43.62.
c. metaph., to be prominent, distinguished, ἀρετῇ Ascl. Tact. 7.2; ὁ ἐξέχων ἀνήρ Demetr. Eloc. 146; οἱ τῶν στρατιωτῶν ἐξέχοντες Hdn. 2.7.7; ἐξέχει ἐν ἑκάστῳ ἄλλο each has its own distinction, Plot. 5.8.4.
II. to be attached to, depend on, cling to, τοῦ θείου Porph. Marc. 11:—but usu. Med., τινός D.H. 1.79, POxy. 1027.6 (i A.D.), D.Chr. 45.5; σώματα ψυχῶν ἐξέχεται Dam. Pr. 99, cf. Procl. Inst. 100 (but prob. corrupt in sense give up, withdraw from, J. AJ 3.12.3).
