ἀρή

A. bane, ruin, ἀρὴν ἑτάροισιν ἀμύνειν Il. 12.334; ἀρῆς ἀλκτῆρα γενέσθαι 18.100; ἀρὴν καὶ λοιγὸν ἀμῦναι 24.489, cf. Od. 2.59; so in A. Supp. 84 (lyr.), where the gloss of the Sch., βλάβης, confirms the reading ἀρῆς for ἄρης. (Cf. pf. part. ἀρημένος = βεβλαμμένος, and pr. n. Ἄρης (cf. Corn. ND 20), perh. also ἄρος, ἀρειά, ἐπήρεια; perh. an old ē stem.)
