Ἄρειος πάγος

Ath. 59.6.—The compd. Ἀρειόπαγος only in a late Att. Inscr., IG 3.1005; but we find the noun Ἀρεοπαγίτης( Ἀρευ- ib.2.839.7) [ι],ου, ὁ, Areopagite, Aeschin. 1.81, IG 3.746, cf. 635, Arist. Ath. 3.6, etc.: prov., Ἀρεοπαγίτου σιωπηλότερος 'as silent as the grave', Them. Or. 21.263a; στεγανώτερος Alciphr. 1.13:—Adj. Ἀρεοπαγῖτις, βουλή Arist.
