ἄπτερος

A. without wings, unwinged, Hom. only in Od., and always in phrase τῇ δ’ ἄπτερος ἔπλετο μῦθος the speech was to her without wings, remained unuttered, opp. ἔπεα πτερόεντα, 17.57; ἄ. φάτις unspoken rumour, A. Ag. 278; ἄπτερα πωτήματα wingless flight, Id. Eu. 250; ἄ δρόμος, of the Trojan horse, v.l. in Tryph. 85.

II. unfeathered, of Harpies, A. Eu. 51; ἄνθρωπος ζῷον ἄ. Pl. Def. 415a; ὄρνις(i.e. the Chorus) E. IT 1095(lyr.); of arrows, Hdt. 7.92.

2. of young birds, unfledged, callow, ἄ. ὠδὶν τέκνων E. HF 1039, cf. Pl. Phdr. 256d.

III. (ἀ‐, = smˆ-) ἄ. τάχος of great speed, Trag.Adesp. 429; cf. ἄπτερα· ἰσόπτερα, ταχέα, ἡδέα, Hsch. Adv. ‐ρως Lyc. 627 (ὁμοπτέρως, ταχέως, Sch.).
