χιάζω

A. play the Chian: esp. imitate the Chian musician Democritus, Ar. Fr. 912 (anap.), Poll. 4.65.
II. χιάζω, mark with two lines crossing like a X:—Pass., ζῷα δυσὶ γραμμαῖς κεχιασμένα D.S. 2.58: esp. of words or lines in which the critic wishes to point out something remarkable, τὸ δὲ τοιοῦτον κεχίασται Sch.S. Ph. 201; χιάζεται ὁ στίχος (in allusion to the word Ἑλένη) Sch.E. Or. 81, etc.; absurdly expld. by Eust. 1462.41.
2. Rhet., arrange four clauses crosswise, Hermog. Inv. 4.3, Porph. in Cat. 79.6.
3. make a cruciform incision, Antyll. ap. Orib. 44.20.31 (χιεζοῦμεν codd.).
4. cross out, cancel a document, PFlor. 61.65 (i A. D.), POxy. 1282.34 (i A. D.), etc.
