A. ruffling of a smooth surface.
I. ripple caused by a gust of wind sweeping over the smooth sea, ὑπὸ φρικὸς Βορέω Il. 23.692; μελαίνῃ φρικὶ καλυφθείς, of Proteus coming to the surface, Od. 4.402; Ζεφύροιο ἐχεύατο πόντον ἔπι φρίξ ripple spread over the sea from the west wind, Il. 7.63; μαλακὴν φρῖκα φέροι Ζέφυρος AP 7.668 (Leon.); θάλασσα φρικὶ χαρασσομένη ib.10.2 (Antip.Sid.), cf. 14 (Agath.).—Poet. word for Prose φρίκη.
II. bristling up, as of the hair, κριὸς βαθείῃ φρικὶ μαλλὸν ὀρθώσας Babr. 93.7.
2. shivering-fit, Hp. Morb. 2.68, POxy. 924.3 (iv A. D.); φρὶξ ἐπέσχε νῶτα καὶ κνήμας Babr. 95.59.
