A. giving pasture or food, φ. γαῖα bounteous earth, S. Ph. 700 (lyr.); but φ. γῆ land that nourished me, Id. Fr. 300.
II. out at grass, grazing, φορβάδες ἵπποι, opp. τροφίαι (horses kept in the stable), Arist. HA 604a22; πῶλος ὅπως ἅμα ματέρι φορβάδι E. Ba. 167 (lyr.); οἷον . . πώλους ἐν ἀγέλῃ νεμομένους φορβάδας τοὺς νέους κέκτησθε Pl. Lg. 666e; αἴξ Nic. Th. 925; σύες A.R. 2.1024: abs., mare, Opp. C. 1.386, Hippiatr. 15, Epic. in BKT 5(1).112.
