A. φιμά AP 6.312 (Anyte):—any instrument for keeping the mouth closed:

I. muzzle, for dogs, calves, etc., φιμὸν περιτιθέναι τινί Luc. Vit.Auct. 22, cf. APl. c., LXX Si. 20.29.

2. gag: hence, silencing by a spell, Tab.Defix.Aud. 25.13 (Curium, iii A. D.).

II. nose-band of a horse's bridle, fitted with pipes, φ. δὲ συρίζουσι βάρβαρον βρόμον A. Th. 463; πώλους . . φιμοῖσιν αὐλωτοῖσιν ἐστομωμένας Id. Fr. 326; ἐμβαλῶ φ. εἰς τὴν ῥῖνά σου LXX Is. 37.29.

III. a kind of cup, used as a dice-box, Aeschin. 1.59, Diph. 76, cf. Poll. 7.203, 10.150.
