A. timorous, shy, in Hom. always epith. of doves (i. e. of περιστεραί, the genus of which πέλειαι are a species, acc. to Eust. 1262.61), τρήρωσι πελειάσιν Il. 5.778, h.Ap. 114, cf. Ar. Av. 575; πέλειαι τρήρωνες Od. 12.63; τρήρωνα πέλειαν Il. 22.140, 23.853, cf. A.R. 3.541; κέπφοι τ. Ar. Pax 1067.

II. fem. Subst. trembler, = περιστερά (metaph. of women), Lyc. 87,423. (Since the Subst. is implied for Hom. in πολυτρήρων, τ. is perh. always a Subst., name of the genus, and τ. πελειάδες is to be compared with ἴρηξ κίρκος, σῦς κάπρος, etc.)
