σφύζω

A. throb, beat violently (cf. σφυγμός), Hp. Epid. 2.5.16, 2.6.5, Judic. 33, Theoc. 11.71.
2. beat, of the pulse, ς. τὸ αἷμα ἐν ταῖς φλεψί Arist. HA 521a6; πηδῶσα οἷον τὰ σφύζοντα like the veins or arteries, Pl. Phdr. 251d; μέρος [ἐμβρύου] μήτε θερμὸν μήτε σφύζον Sor. 2.63.
3. metaph. of any violent motion, σφύζοντος καὶ σφαδᾴζοντος καὶ πηδῶντος Longin. Rh. p.201 H., cf. Dam. Pr. 221; ς. ἐπὶ ταῦτα to be very eager after . . , Anon. ap.Suid.
4. prob. f.l. in Thphr. Char. 19.6.
