Germania

prose

The earliest detailed account of the Germanic peoples — their customs, their gods, their alarming habit of deciding important matters while drunk and confirming them sober. Tacitus is not a neutral anthropologist. He uses the Germans as a mirror for Roman decadence: these barbarians may be violent and unwashed, but at least they haven't been corrupted by wealth. The text was rediscovered in the fifteenth century and has been politically misused ever since.
