Polyneices begs his father's blessing for his attack on Thebes. Oedipus refuses and curses both sons: they will kill each other.
The chorus meditates on old age: not to be born is best, and the second-best is to die young.
Thunder sounds. Oedipus recognises the signal of his death. He summons Theseus.
The chorus prays that Oedipus's passage to the underworld be gentle.
A messenger describes Oedipus's last moments: he walked unaided into the grove, washed, said farewell, and then — Theseus alone witnessed the end.
Antigone and Ismene weep. Theseus honours his promise to keep the secret. The burial site will protect Athens forever.
