Thyestes

drama

The most horrifying play from antiquity. Atreus, consumed by hatred for his brother Thyestes, invites him to a reconciliation banquet — and serves him his own children. Seneca spares nothing: the murder, the cooking, the revelation. The play begins with a ghost and a Fury and gets worse from there. This is the play that influenced the Elizabethan revenge tradition more than any other — Titus Andronicus, The Duchess of Malfi, every stage banquet that ends in blood.
