Hercules Oetaeus

drama

Hercules is dying. The poisoned robe sent by his jealous wife Deianira is burning him alive. He climbs Mount Oeta, builds his own funeral pyre, and ascends to heaven as a god. The longest of the Senecan tragedies and the most debated — some scholars doubt Seneca wrote it. Whether he did or not, the final scenes of Hercules choosing his own death and achieving apotheosis are extraordinary.
