I. a basket filled with stones, which the besieged threw down on the heads of the besiegers (post-class.): ut de ligno crates facerent, quas metellas vocaverunt, lapidibusque complerent, etc. (al. metilas, medullas, metulas), Veg. Mil. 4, 6.
